Bass singer and guitarist Shelby Bransford was born in Horse Cave, Kentucky, in 1934, where he sang in the choir at First Baptist Church. In 1948, he began singing with The Silvertone Harmonizers under the leadership of Rev. George Thornton, and he sang with that group until 1964. In 1965, he moved to Louisville where he became a member of Corinthian Baptist Church and joined the legendary quartet The Religious Five.
Bransford later recorded three 45s under the name The Singing Son of Zion, two for Joe Thomas’ Sensational Sounds and one for Spiritual Jubilee. He died tragically in a work accident in 1983 at the age of 48.
